Wolves now have a serious chance of signing free agent Diego Costa in the coming days, and Fabrizio Romano has offered some insight into the prospective deal.

Romano has been speaking on the Que Golazo YouTube channel following the conclusion of the summer window.

Bruno Lage has already been handed a major injury blow in the early stages of this new campaign, with new striker Sasa Kalajdzic suffering an ACL injury against Southampton.

This has seemingly forced Wolves back into the market for a striker, with only free agents now to choose from as the former Chelsea man seems set for a medical at Molineux.

But with question marks over the fitness of the 33-year-old, Romano has heard the Spanish striker has continued to train at a high level despite becoming a free agent.

He said: “Wolves have an agreement with Diego, with his agents, because they already discussed about the contract, it is a one-year deal so they’re ready to sign this contract.

“But there is an important step – the medical test. Because Diego Costa is not playing competitive football [for a] long time, so they want to make sure that he’s in good condition. I’m told that he’s always training at the best level. So let’s see how it will go. It will be tomorrow [Tuesday], this test for Diego Costa, the medical in England.”

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

This is certainly a risk given Costa has now been without a club since the beginning of the calendar year after parting ways with Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro.

However, given Raul Jimenez has been unable to refind his form since his serious head injury, it is probably a risk which Wolves have to take, and if nothing else, Costa can certainly provide the Old Gold with some experience from his time at Chelsea.

It is not since the 2019/20 campaign that the striker has played more than 20 games in a single league campaign in Europe, and the two campaigns before that saw him make a combined 31 league appearances (via Transfermarkt).

Therefore, we believe Wolves fans should take Romano’s comments with a pinch of salt, as although Costa appears to have been maintaining his fitness levels over the past eight months or so, he is arguably no longer at the peak of his powers compared to the last time he played in the Premier League.
