ExWHUemployee has shared his excitement after revealing that West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd may return from injury before the World Cup.
The centre-back arrived in east London this summer, having joined the Hammers in a high-profile £30m transfer from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes.
However, before he even played a competitive game for West Ham, he picked up an ankle injury in a friendly match against Rangers.
While it was unclear exactly how long he would be out for, Ex reported at the time that it could be in the region of about three months.
In a recent update on The West Ham Way podcast, though, the insider was happy to provide some positive news, with Aguerd said to be ‘recovering well’.
Ex said: “Aguerd is the main one that’s out for a while, but apparently he’s recovering quite quickly. He’s recovering well.
“He’s back at training. He’s not physically training in terms of with a ball, but he’s actually physically doing exercise and stuff.
“So hopefully he might be a little bit ahead of schedule. We may be able to see him before the World Cup, so that’s good news.”
TIF Thoughts on Nayef Aguerd and West Ham…
Considering the Hammers spent all that money on the centre-back, it’s been a bit of a nightmare start to his career with the Premier League club.
However, big things are still expected of Aguerd – with trusted journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke revealing that he was told the defender is ‘the best value left-sided centre-back in Europe and that every club should be after him’.
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar begins on 20th November, so there isn’t a huge amount of time left for the Morrocan to get himself back to full fitness, but it will certainly be a major boost for the club if he can make his competitive debut before the international tournament gets underway.
