Robbie Earle has been speaking about West Ham’s summer signing Gianluca Scamacca on The 2 Robbies podcast and how it could now be his chance to shine.

Despite costing the club £32 million, it has been a frustrating start to the season domestically for Scamacca having been afforded just a single league start all season, which thus far, is the only game the Hammers have won.

That in itself should suggest that he is the man to be leading the line for West Ham this season and not just kept on the sidelines and utilised in the Europa Conference League, something that Earle has alluded to.

Earle believes that David Moyes may have to start playing Scamacca to help turn around West Ham’s fortunes.

(54:10) “I think there’s certainly plenty of credit in the bank for what he’s done over the last few seasons [Moyes] and obviously spending money, he might have to give some of those guys [new signings] a go, he might have to trust them a little bit more.

“Big Scamacca scored in Europe, scored a great goal, turned and smacked one in on Thursday night I remember watching, maybe he’s got to give him a go up top.”

TIF Thoughts on Scamacca…

When he arrived for big money over the summer to compete with a 32-year-old Michail Antonio, Scamacca, who has been described as a ‘huge talent’, will have likely been promised, but also confident, about getting regular starts in the Premier League, but heading into the first international break and that’s not been the case.

Given how poor West Ham have been in the league so far this season, there will likely be increased amounts of pressure on Moyes to unleash Scamacca by fans who will be frustrated by what they’re seeing on the pitch, but potentially from the owners given they splashed out £32 million on him.

The board will want to see a return on their investment in someone who is now the club’s fourth most expensive signing, and starting just one league game while the Hammers have been struggling in front of goal, they’re the lowest scoring side in the Premier League, won’t likely please the people above Moyes, and it even appears his striker competition Antonio knows his ability labelling him ‘quality‘ earlier in the summer.
