Tottenham Hotspur believe that Bryan Gil would benefit from another season out on loan in Spain, but are unlikely to sanction a move away unless they can secure the signing of a replacement.

That is according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge, who was speaking to This is Futbol about Spurs’ potential transfer business on deadline day.

It was rumoured that Tottenham were interested in a deal for Leeds United and Wales winger Daniel James this summer, who would have acted as a direct replacement for Gil, who would likely move to Valencia.

However, a report from the Evening Standard has suggested that whilst James is likely to leave Elland Road today, a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium seems unlikely, with Fulham now his most likely suitors.

And Bridge believes that whilst Spurs would like Gil to go out and play regular football on loan, a move for the young Spaniard is unlikely unless a replacement can be found in the remaining hours of the window.

Bridge said: “I think there’s a general agreement that he [Gil] would probably benefit from playing another season in Spain.

“He feels he can get into the Spain World Cup squad. He’s not going to do that at Tottenham from the bench.

“So he was hoping this move would materialise; Gennaro Gattuso, the Valencia manager, has also said he hopes it gets done, but I think he was quite open and he said that he had to wait for Tottenham to get their replacement.

“But I don’t see Spurs loaning him out if Spurs don’t get a replacement.”

TIF Thoughts on Bridge’s comments…

At the time of Bridge’s update and the time of writing, it had seemed that Gil’s future hung in the balance. It has since emerged that the Spaniard will in fact be staying, with Valencia instead bringing in Justin Kluivert.

We believe that a loan move would have been in the best interests of both Gil and Tottenham, but the club simply could not have afforded to be caught short if the squad suffered injuries to attacking players this season, especially during a Premier League and Champions League campaign.

The 11-time Spain U21 international, who has been described as “a potential star in the making” by David Cartlidge, made 17 appearances whilst on loan at Valencia last season, providing a singular assist according to Transfermarkt, suggesting that he needs a regular run of first-team football before Spurs make a decision on his future in north London.

So today’s events could frustrate the Barbate-born wide man, as his lack of game time will have a significant impact on his chances of making Spain’s World Cup squad.
