Tottenham Hotspur will have an eye on their long-term options for potentially replacing Hugo Lloris in the upcoming transfer windows.

This has been suggested by reliable Spurs journalist Alasdair Gold, who has been addressing the latest transfer news on the Last Word On Spurs YouTube channel.

Reports emerged earlier in the week claiming the Lilywhites have identified Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak as a potential replacement for the Frenchman.

Lloris has now played over 400 games for Spurs since arriving back in 2012 and has not shown any signs of being dislodged from the starting XI.

However, at the age of 35, Gold does believe the north London club will have their eyes on the future and life after Lloris – but has hinted at potentially identifying a younger successor.

He said: “Obviously, Oblak’s class, he is class. I think the club, of course, will be looking towards the future.

“And I just wonder with Lloris at the moment, whether getting a big, big ‘keeper who is playing week-in, week-out for their club and convincing them to come for next summer – it’s gonna be a tough one.

“I wonder whether they end up maybe going a little bit younger with someone that they can maybe kind of bring in as the heir for the following season on that promise.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

Goalkeepers often have a longer shelf life than outfield players, however, at the age of 35, we agree Spurs will have to start weighing up their options for life after Lloris.

Do Spurs need to replace Lloris yet?

Yes

Yes

No

No

The Frenchman put pen to paper on a new deal earlier this year which will see his contractual stay in north London extend until 2024.

And it has to be said, Lloris has not exactly shown any signs of slowing down, with Gold awarding the Spurs captain an 8/10 rating for the 2021/22 campaign.

Although Gold suggests Spurs may look for a younger option, Oblak would be a player who would almost be able to match the experience of Lloris at the age of 29 and 360 appearances for Atletico Madrid.

Given Antonio Conte has put his trust in the experience of the likes of Ivan Perisic over the shunned Djed Spence, it will be interesting to see whether the Italian has a big say on the potential replacement if they indeed go down the route Gold hints at.
