According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur missed the chance to sign Jonathan David, who was on their list this summer despite being available for a good price.

The Lilywhites have started the season incredibly well as they are currently unbeaten in the Premier League and are right in the battle for the title so far through the first seven games of the season.

A big reason for their great form in the league so far this season is their shrewd business in the summer transfer window. With their £152.91m, they picked up Richarlison, Ivan Perisic, and Cristian Romero, all of which have been crucial to Antonio Conte’s plans.

However, it was recently revealed by Romano that Fabio Paratici and the Spurs brass were interested in signing Lille star man Jonathan David, but opted to go in a different direction despite the French side only wanting around €35m.

Romano said, “Jonathan David, this striker guys I think in the summer where many clubs wanted the new striker Jonathan David was a big chance on the market because Lille were prepared to sell him around 35, 40 million euros and then many clubs inquiring, he was in the list of Tottenham and Arsenal in January then they decided to go for different strategies.

“But Jonathan David is always a good idea. He’s scoring goals. He knows international football and now with the World Cup with Canada, I think right after if he’s going to score some goals his price will go up so a big chance missed this summer but I’m sure name we will keep in the conversation.” (2:47)

TIF Thoughts on David…

While the north London club did well in signing Richarlison, who has been superb so far this season, David is more of an out-and-out striker who could not have only been a great rotation option for Harry Kane, but a legitimate replacement for him in the future.

So far this season David, who has been called ‘elite’, has started in stellar form, picking up four goals and two assists in his first seven games. This is a continuation of his 21/22 form which put him in the sights of top teams where he grabbed 19 goals across all competitions for Les Dogues.

Spurs still need to recruit another number-nine option behind Kane. Richarlison can do a great job across the entire front line but having a starlet like David would have taken this team to new heights and they will regret not signing him if another big team comes in for him soon.
