Journalist Ben Jacobs believes Tottenham Hotspur will regret the day they sold Marcus Edwards after he shone against the club in their recent Champions League fixture.
Despite Spurs’ good start to the season, where they currently sit third in the table, they picked up their first loss of the campaign in midweek, leaving them second in Group D.
Their defeat against Portuguese giants Sporting this week came after they conceded two late goals following an underwhelming performance that looked certain to finish with the points being shared.
One of the most impressive players in the game was Edwards, who used to play for the Lilywhites before leaving the club on a permanent deal in 2019 to Vitoria Guimaraes, who he left to join Sporting in January.
Losing him on a free now looks like a huge blunder from Spurs, and Jacobs believes they will regret the day they lost Edwards after his great performance in Europe.
Jacobs told The Done Deal Show: “Tottenham’s just really interesting, isn’t it, because they had that poor loss away at Sporting by two goals to nil – we mentioned the Edwards goal that could have been, and let’s not forget that he was a member of the Spurs academy as well.
“I think they’ll be ruing letting him go, to be perfectly honest with you.”
TIF Thoughts on Jacobs’ comments…
Spurs have a plethora of attacking talent in the side, but losing out on a player like Edwards who has just showcased his skills in the best competition in European football does now look like a huge mistake from the club.
The 23-year-old has bagged three goals and three assists in the side’s opening eight games, including a goal and assist in their first Champions League game against Eintracht Frankfurt, which they won 3-0.
While they do have the likes of Harry Kane, Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-min in attack, Edwards would currently rank second among them for goals in all competitions, only beaten by Kane.
With the likes of Kane and Son of a similar age, not having a promising 23-year-old to look forward to is a huge blow. They still have Kulusevski and Richarlison, but if Edwards continues to improve, he could end up better than both and leave Spurs regretting the day he slipped through their fingers.
Will Spurs regret losing Edwards?YesNo |
One thing we have a huge problem with @ Spurs is we stifle talent. The only chance talent has is by going out on loan, and even then for some reason there seems to be a psychological block in players.
Jack Clarke is going to be yet another example of this. We bought him from Leeds when he looked like he had a very bright future. 4 or 5 years on and he had to be sold before finally fulfilling his potential elsewhere.
Whoever the psychology team are @ Spurs, I think perhaps we need to employ the guy who helped Ronnie O’Sullivan overcome his demons, Steve Peters I believe his name is!
