Tottenham Hotspur will fancy their chances of putting in a real fight for the signature of Alessandro Bastoni in the coming transfer windows.

This has been suggested by the insider Dean Jones who has been speaking to GiveMeSport about the future of the Italian centre-back.

Over this summer’s transfer window, it was apparent the Inter Milan defender was up there at the top of Fabio Paratici’s wishlist in north London.

Spurs were putting in a real pursuit of the 23-year-old but, after a meeting with the Serie A side, Bastoni opted to remain at the San Siro for the time being.

However, Jones believes Spurs will be able to go back in for the Italian and put up a fight amid reported interest from the two Manchester clubs:

“In the past, I think they’d have probably feared the worst. But right now, I think that they would have reason to still be willing to go head-to-head for something like this,” he told GMS.

“Conte’s got a good record so far with players brought in from Italy; that’s a good selling point.

“As long as the player himself would be assured that Conte is hanging around, then I think that Tottenham would have a good a chance of anyone of competing with Man City if they do go for Bastoni.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Interestingly, Bastoni followed Cristian Romero earlier on this season, so perhaps the pair are already friends having played against each other in the Serie A before the Argentine’s move.

Spurs definitely sit in a strong position if they are to go back in for Bastoni with a belief the player would like to play under Antonio Conte again at some point in his career.

Would Bastoni transform the Spurs defence?

No

But if Manchester City are interested in bringing him to the Premier League then Spurs will likely face fierce competition in the race for his signature.

Bastoni – hailed as a ‘genius’ – did seem intent on not leaving Inter this summer with it not feeling like the right time in his career to uproot and move to a different country.

It has been a tricky start to the 2022/23 campaign for Bastoni – perhaps not going the way he would’ve wanted. So it will be interesting to see if his frustrations continue throughout the season and potentially change his mind on this summer’s decision.
