Newcastle United: Luke Edwards now expects Youri Tielemans deal to be off

|

Newcastle United are now unlikely to land Youri Tielemans in the final stages of this summer’s transfer window.

This is according to reliable journalist Luke Edwards, who has been speaking on the BBC Transfer Gossip Daily podcast to discuss the latest in the window.

Tielemans has been linked with a potential departure from the King Power Stadium all summer long, with Arsenal one of the main clubs believed to hold an interest.

But earlier this week, it was suggested Eddie Howe’s men could look to make a late move for the Belgian as their search goes on for a new central midfielder.

Now, with hours remaining until the window closes, Edwards believes the likelihood of Newcastle now making a move for the 25-year-old is fading:

“I don’t think so, not in this window. Newcastle have certainly looked at it in the last couple of days, probably since the start of the week, really since getting [Alexander] Isak in through the door.

“Tielemans would have been great for them. I just think time has run out a little bit for them. I think Leicester are toying whether to keep him, maybe try and sell him in January.”

TIF Thoughts on Edwards’ comments…

There is certainly a positive to be taken from Newcastle not pursuing a move for the Leicester man as it shows the owners are not just buying for the sake of it.

Do you expect NUFC to sign a midfielder today?

No

However, with just hours to go in the window, the Toon are yet to bring in a central midfielder – which is believed to have been one of their main targets this summer, so the club could well be bitterly disappointed if they have left it too late to seal a doable deal.

But the future of Conor Gallagher remains up in the air at Chelsea, so a season-long loan move for the Englishman is potentially one to keep an eye out for, with Newcastle said to hold an interest.

Football journalists are now trying to save face for constantly making up stories about Tielemans going to Arsenal or Newcastle. There is no evidence that either ever wanted him.
