Luke Edwards has slammed the reasoning behind Newcastle United getting a goal ruled out on Saturday.

It was a frustrating afternoon on Tyneside for Newcastle as they squandered several chances to take the lead on Saturday – and when they finally put the ball in the back of the net, VAR intervened and ruled it out.

The reasoning behind the decision was said to be for a foul from Joe Willock on Vicente Guaita, although they appeared to ignore the push in the back Willock got that flung him into the Spaniard.

Edwards has now claimed that VAR has since explained that they thought the push on Willock was ‘normal’, leaving the journalist angered.

He said: “The explanation given (the lame excuse) for Willock decision was that the contact was ‘normal’ and did not cause the collision with the goalkeeper. Embarrassingly bad. Laughable really, but also quite shocking.”

Should the NUFC goal have stood?

TIF Thoughts on the disallowed goal…

The fact that the PGMOL has accepted both of the incidents involving Newcastle and West Ham United were wrong just goes to show how poor the decision must have been, or they would have backed their officials.

Considering Willock was already in the air and looking to win the ball and get a shot on target, Tyrick Mitchell’s push in the back shouldn’t have been seen as normal as he sent the midfielder flying into the ‘keeper.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Therefore, the fact that VAR got involved and handed Crystal Palace a free-kick is quite shocking as the more plausible outcome should have been allowing the goal to stand or awarding Newcastle a penalty for the push.
