Keith Downie has been speaking on The Magpies Channel suggesting Newcastle United fans should ‘expect the unexpected’ as the transfer deadline nears.

Downie’s fellow Sky Sports reporter, Pete Graves, tweeted earlier on deadline day saying things were still ‘bubbling’ at Newcastle and insisted that the club liked Youri Tielemans, as well as loan deals for the likes of Conor Gallagher and Christian Pulisic.

With just a few hours remaining in the transfer window, it appears unlikely that anything other than Harrison Ashby may be arriving on Tyneside as right-back cover will happen, although Downie insisted the unexpected could still occur.

Downie has urged Newcastle fans to expect the unexpected in the remaining few hours.

Speaking on Thursday afternoon, he said: “It’s all quiet in terms of the arrivals at Newcastle right now, but as we know, deadline day is a long day and anything can happen, and Newcastle are obviously in a much different position now with the new owners behind them than they were this time last year when it was Mike Ashley.

Will Newcastle make anymore signings?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“So I feel at the moment with Newcastle, you almost need to expect the unexpected. We saw that last week with Alexander Isak – nobody expected him to arrive, and suddenly within 24 hours, it changed. So I just think we need to be awake and alert for things changing with Newcastle.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s late transfer business…

It appears very unlikely that Newcastle will manage to secure any blockbuster signings in the final few hours of deadline day, which may disappoint Newcastle fans, but they have already been spoilt this summer by PIF.

This is because last summer, they struggled and haggled to bring in Joe Willock on a permanent basis, whereas now under new ownership, they can splash out club-record fees if they see fit as they did for Isak.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

However, the Magpies do appear to be trying to do some form of late business in the form of Ashby, who is said to be closing in on a move to Tyneside as cover for Kieran Trippier due to the injury sustained by Emil Krafth last week.

And given there are other injuries in the squad at present, perhaps there are other irons in the fire.
