Keith Downie has been speaking on The Magpies Channel about Newcastle United midfield target Youri Tielemans.

It has been reported this week that Newcastle are indeed still interested in Tielemans as the deadline approaches as he looks to engineer a move away – something he hoped would happen this summer.

The Magpies are in the market for a new midfielder, mainly down to injuries sustained by Jonjo Shelvey and Bruno Guimaraes, so landing someone of Tielemans’ ability and stature would be a major coup.

Downie has admitted that Newcastle are now said to be the most likely side to lodge a late window bid for the Leicester City man.

He said: “I’ve just been on the phone there to one of my colleagues who covers Leicester asking him about Youri Tielemans, because I think he’s a player that Newcastle have obviously had interest in this window.

Should Newcastle sign Tielemans?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“His information at the moment is that if there is going to be a bid for him today, it’ll be more likely from Newcastle than it would be from Arsenal.”

TIF Thoughts on interest in Tielemans…

While Newcastle may well be interested in Tielemans and could even lodge a bid on deadline day, it remains to be seen whether or not the midfielder would be willing to join a club with no European football – something that was said to be important for him.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Luke Edwards has recently tweeted the problem Newcastle are facing with Tielemans is that he has very high wages, and therefore, offering him a hefty wage packet could perhaps disrupt their structure and thus anger some current squad players, so it could be a fine balancing act for Howe as to whether they press forward with this potential transfer.

But it is nevertheless exciting that Newcastle appear to be in pole position if a move for Tielemans becomes a realistic possibility.
