Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe could play Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak in the same starting XI.

That is according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the latest news at St. James’ Park.

Howe had been looking to add to his striker options throughout the summer, and got his wish when the Magpies secured the signing of Sweden international Isak from Real Sociedad for a fee in the region of £60m towards the end of August.

That leaves Newcastle with Isak, Wilson, and Chris Wood as the club’s main centre-forward options.

But O’Rourke believes that Isak and Wilson could be capable of playing the same starting XI this season, with the former being versatile enough to play anywhere in the front line.

“I think they potentially could play in the same starting XI.

“Callum Wilson, I’m sure would be the number nine as you said, Isak can play anywhere across the front three as well.

“So, it does give options to Eddie Howe’s team as well.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments

We believe that it would be remiss of Howe to not utilise the goalscoring talents of both Wilson and Isak when the pair are fit, with the former Bournemouth manager needing to find a way to get the pair in the same team.

The 37-time Sweden international scored 44 times in 130 appearances for Sociedad according to Transfermarkt, whilst Wilson has plundered 22 goals in just 44 Magpies appearances according to the same stats provider.

This shows that there is too much fire power within that pairing for Howe not utilise the pair of them effectively this season, and therefore we think he needs to find a way to get both of them into the starting line-up.
