Journalist Ben Jacobs has been speaking on the Mouth of the Tyne YouTube channel about how Newcastle United may look to land another marquee signing in January.

It appeared that PIF were certainly going to be keeping the purse strings relatively tight over the summer transfer window with just three new players arriving until the final week of the window before they splashed lavishly on Alexander Isak.

The Swedish striker is now the club’s record signing, and while he had been scouted earlier in the summer, the Magpies may well have reacted to Callum Wilson’s injury during the transfer window before taking the plunge on their new No 14.

Despite over £200m having been spent in 2022, Jacobs believes that PIF could well be lining up another marquee arrival in the January transfer window.

He said: “The only thing they really missed out on was more of a creative-minded player – someone, effectively, that can either play centrally or out wide, that can be versatile, that can switch sides, that is a high source of assists and can chip in potentially, with 5 or 10 goals a season as well, depending on how much freedom they’re given to get into the box, and I think that will be the top priority.

Do Newcastle need further signings in January?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“They’ve already brought in another backup goalkeeper now, so there’s not too much more that they need to do.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if things are going well, if Newcastle look to make one marquee signing to reinforce their attacking options and make sure that if Wilson gets injured or Isak doesn’t take to the Premier League too quickly, then at that point, they’ve got enough to continue [the] momentum.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s January transfer window plans…

It has been reported that after seeing two bids rejected during the summer transfer window, Newcastle could be returning in January for James Maddison, who at that point, would only have 18 months left on his contract at Leicester City.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Based on Jacobs’ comments, given that Maddison can play centrally or out wide and provide goals and assists – he did so 30 times last campaign – it would make sense for the Magpies to return for the player who was clearly rated by the scouting department and Howe over the summer.

However, it may well depend on whether Maddison decides to sign a new contract and how well Leicester and Newcastle are doing respectively in the Premier League, because if the Foxes are struggling and Howe has his side flying near the European spots, Maddison may well look to force through a mid-season move and help Newcastle finish inside the top seven.
