Newcastle United: Talbot claims club have looked at Haidara ahead of deadline

According to journalist Jacque Talbot, Newcastle United have looked at bringing in Amadou Haidara before the deadline on Thursday evening, but a deal at this point does not look likely.

After an explosive start to the transfer window with the incomings of Sven Botman, Nick Pope and Matt Targett, they slowed down until recently when they broke their record transfer fee with the acquisition of exciting striker Alexander Isak.

However, with the deadline fast approaching, they could do some more business to bolster their options after their impressive display in their unfortunate recent 2-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.

One of these players they like, as mentioned by Talbot, is Haidara, who has impressed at Red Bull Leipzig. However, Talbot has claimed he does not believe the deal will be able to be completed as the club are not willing to sell.

He said: “Newcastle interested in Haidara at Leipzig and Leipzig don’t really know me. They talk to me, but they don’t really know me.

“The line is he’s not being sold, but you can tell from other places that they’re angling him – it could be from the agent, I don’t know.

“But Newcastle have looked at Haidara, I can’t see that happening, really. But it’s just a little bit of interesting information.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on Haidara to Newcastle…

The central midfielder, who has been described as a ‘weapon’, has featured in three of their four Bundesliga games so far and while he has not picked up a goal or assist, he has shown to be a part of Domenico Tedesco’s plans as a rotation player as Leipzig looks to push for a title race.

Bringing in a young and promising central midfielder before the end of the deadline should be a key assignment for the Magpies with the recent injuries to Bruno Guimaraes and Jonjo Shelvey. While it does not look like Guimaraes will be out for long, they do not have much depth at the position.

Haidara would be great for this as he is a versatile midfielder who currently ranks in the 98th percentile for progressive passes, 91st for blocks, and 82nd for progressive carries per game compared to other midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues (FBref).

Even though Talbot does not believes they can get it done, they should continue to track the midfielder further as he is obviously talented and considering he is coming off the bench, Leipzig could be tempted to sell in another window.

Should Newcastle push for Haidara?
