Newcastle United hope they have the advantage over other suitors when it comes to the signing of transfer target Bayer Leverkusen and France winger Moussa Diaby.

That is according to transfer insider Dean Jones, who was speaking to GIVEMESPORT about the latest news from St. James’ Park.

The Magpies have made five signings this summer, reported to be worth a total spend of over £120m, but it seems that Eddie Howe’s side are still looking at reinforcing the club’s attacking options.

Newcastle had shown an interest in Leverkusen’s Diaby alongside Arsenal this summer, with the Bundesliga side demanding a fee of around £55m for the winger.

However a deal never materialised during the transfer window, with Howe’s side’s marquee signing ending up being that of Real Sociedad and Sweden striker Alexander Isak, for a fee of around £60m.

And Jones believes that whilst Newcastle will face competition for the wide man in future transfer windows, the club will be confident of leading the race for his signature.

“There will undoubtedly be competition for Diaby, he is brilliant,” Jones told GIVEMESPORT.

“Newcastle have put in the hard yards already though so they will hope that if they want to pick up again on that transfer, they would be ahead of anyone else.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments

We believe that Newcastle fans will be delighted to hear that there’s a good chance they will be leading the race for the signature of Diaby whenever they decide to pursue the winger.

The eight-time France international, who has been described as an ‘elite athlete’, enjoyed a stunning season last time out, scoring 17 goals and providing 14 assists in 42 appearances according to Transfermarkt, suggesting he could add some fire-power to the Premier League side’s frontline.

Therefore, we think that if Newcastle can sign the 23-year-old for £55m or less, he would represent stunning value at St. James’ Park.
