Journalist John Gibson has suggested that Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy will have to leave the club soon.

So far this season, the 27-year-old has featured off the bench in every Premier League game but he hasn’t done enough to earn a start in that time.  In fact, across those appearances, as well as one start in the EFL cup, he is yet to score or register an assist.

As a result of their new owners, Newcastle can afford to go out and spend big on exciting new transfers – as shown by recent deals for the likes of Alexander Isak and Sven Botman – and so if Murphy can’t improve his form, he could be in trouble.

Indeed, while talking about poor players in the team who need to step up, he told the Everything is Black and White podcast: “You can go on to so many of them.

TIF thoughts on Jacob Murphy and Newcastle…

In 114 appearances for Newcastle United, Murphy has scored just five goals and registered nine assists. With that in mind, it’s safe to say he’s never been a consistent performer for the club.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

According to FBRef, compared to positional peers in the top five leagues and European competition over the last 365 days, he is in the lower ten percentile for assists, lower 11 for expected assists, and lower four for pass completion.

What’s more, according to a recent tweet from Ben Jacobs, the Magpies are one of a number of clubs interested in signing Ukrainian winger Mykhaylo Mudryk this January.

If that happens, and Murphy can’t improve his form in the meantime, it’s easy to see how the Englishman could soon be on his way out of the club.
