Newcastle United may well have been on the wrong end of a controversial VAR call when they had a goal disallowed in their game this weekend.
However, despite a number of chances, the first half passed Eddie Howe and co by without his side being able to break the deadlock.
And with the game still level early on in the second 45, it looked as though Newcastle had finally taken the lead when Kieran Trippier’s freekick saw the ball headed back across goal, before hitting Tyrick Mitchell and then falling into the back of the net.
Although the goal was initially given, VAR opted to intervene and Joe Willock was adjudged to have fouled Vicente Guaita shortly before the ball went in.
Footage shared on social media shows the incident and it could be argued that Mitchell actually pushed Willock into Guaita and therefore the goal should have stood.
TIF thoughts on the foul and Newcastle United…
In the end, as shown in the footage, it was a pretty nasty clash between player and goalkeeper and Willock was very nearly subbed off for Elliot Anderson but managed to play on.
Having been on the wrong end of some officiating in the recent loss to Liverpool as well – when the Reds scored a 98th-minute winner, three minutes after the game was meant to end – it’s fair to say fans won’t be too happy with some of the calls suffered at the moment.
However, it’s a long season and having missed out on some recent decisions in the early stages of this new Premier League campaign, perhaps things will even out over the coming months.
