Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on the Que Golazo YouTube channel about how Newcastle United desperately wanted to sign Christian Pulisic on loan over the summer.

It was no secret over the summer that Newcastle and Eddie Howe were keen to add attacking reinforcements to their squad, and while they did manage to land Alexander Isak, he was the only offensive signing that joined the club.

PIF instead handed Howe two defenders and a new goalkeeper, who have proved to be solid pieces of business thus far, but they failed to hand Howe more attacking options, although they certainly did try and bring some in, especially Pulisic, according to Romano.

Newcastle were said to be obsessed with Pulisic over the summer as Romano has revealed.

“Strong interest from Newcastle, Newcastle were obsessed with Christian [Pulisic] and they wanted him, but they wanted him on loan and not on a permanent deal.

“They wanted him on loan maybe with a buy option but not mandatory and this is why Chelsea decided to say no.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s interest in Pulisic…

It was heavily reported that Newcastle were interested in a whole load of Chelsea players over the summer, mainly on loan deals, but with Pulisic it now appears clear that was never likely to suit Chelsea and the Magpies were seemingly wasting their time.

Pulisic, who will be captaining the USA at Qatar this winter in the World Cup, will have likely wanted a move away, even until January to ensure he’d be getting minutes and building up his match fitness ahead of a huge tournament for his country and one in which he will be expected to perform well in with former manager Jurgen Klinsman labelling him ‘fantastic‘ in the past.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

The deal would have likely worked out for both parties as Pulisic would’ve been a serious upgrade on the likes of Jacob Murphy, Ryan Fraser and Miguel Almiron, who only managed to score four goals between them last season in the league, whereas Pulisic got six just by himself in a much more competitive Chelsea side and in return the American would have been playing week in, week out.
