Newcastle United: Journalist drops positive Callum Wilson claim

|

Journalist Dean Jones insists that Callum Wilson will return this weekend for Newcastle United.

Wilson hasn’t kicked a ball for Newcastle since 21st August in the Magpies’ 3-3 draw against Premier League champions Manchester City, with their number nine suffering yet another hamstring injury.

The blow was somewhat softened by the arrival of Alexander Isak, who hit the ground running with two goals in his first three starts, but with the Sweden international now injured himself, Wilson’s expected return is certainly very timely.

Speaking on the Chasing Green Arrows YouTube channel, Jones revealed what he had been told about Wilson’s potential Newcastle return against Fulham this weekend.

He said: “Callum Wilson, I’m told, will be back for this fixture, so that is something that does change things a little bit for Newcastle, might dig them out of a hole.

Who is a better striker?

“Let’s be honest, Callum Wilson is actually their most reliable source of goals so far this season. Isak might be considered a better player overall, but Wilson was great, Wilson was doing very well. So, Callum Wilson should be back for Newcastle.”

TIF Thoughts on Wilson’s return…

While many fans and Eddie Howe will have been excited at the thought of deploying both Alexander Isak and Wilson in the same team, he will just have to deal with the club’s top scorer for the last two seasons until Isak returns from his injury.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Wilson has simply been a sensational player for the Magpies, having scored 22 goals in just 42 league starts for Newcastle, which shows why Howe will continue to put his trust in Wilson despite having a club-record signing in the form of Isak within their ranks.

However, it can’t be ignored how poor Wilson’s injury record has been on Tyneside, with the 30-year-old not managing to go a full season without significant time on the sidelines, which hasn’t only hampered his own ambitions and goals, but also those of Newcastle, who have had to learn to cope without their talisman. Thankfully, his return will be a major boost on Saturday afternoon.
