Newcastle United could look to return their interest in James Maddison when the January transfer window opens.

This has been suggested by Toon reporter Aaron Stokes, who has been speaking on the Everything is Black & White podcast to discuss Newcastle’s plans ahead of the winter window.

Eddie Howe’s side had been linked with the Englishman over the summer, with two reported bids being lodged to Leicester City for the midfielder.

However, neither were accepted, with the Foxes believed to be holding out for a bid in the region of £60m for the 25-year-old, who now has under two years remaining on his deal.

But as the Magpies failed to bring in a single midfielder over the summer, Stokes believes attentions could turn back to Maddison in January.

He said: “If Leicester are really struggling in January, you could see Newcastle going back in for a bid straight away, because it looks, from what we’ve seen so far this season, is Newcastle have been crying out for a No 10 like Maddison in their team. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see them go back and for him in January over [Youri] Tielemans.”

TIF Thoughts on Stokes’ comments…

Newcastle have endured issues with injuries in midfield already this season, having failed to strengthen their options over the summer window.

Do you think Maddison would leave in January?

Yes

Yes

No

No

With the likes of Bruno Guimaraes sidelined, it leaves Howe without the talisman who scored five goals in the second half of the campaign after joining from Lyon.

And Maddison, who has interestingly been compared statistically to Serie A star Paulo Dybala (as per FBref), has started off the new campaign in impressive fashion, with three goals and an assist in six Premier League appearances (via Transfermarkt).

However, with this fine form in mind, it may prove even more difficult to prise Maddison away from Leicester with the Foxes struggling so much in the early stages of the season.
