The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has revealed that there is some confusion over the injury to Newcastle United’s club-record signing, Alexander Isak.

Isak was seemingly fast-tracked into St James’ Park when Callum Wilson was forced off with a hamstring injury earlier in the season, as just a matter of weeks earlier, it was reported that the Magpies had ditched any attempt to bring in the Swedish striker due to his asking price.

While Isak has hit the ground running with two goals in three starts for Newcastle, his progress and development has been halted somewhat due to an injury sustained while away on international duty.

Speaking on the latest episode of Pod on the Tyne, Waugh has claimed that after speaking to several people, the diagnosis is still very much unclear on what his injury is.

He said: “First we heard that Alexander Isak was training alone with Sweden last week and then he pulled out of the Sweden squad with an as-of-yet unspecified injury. I’ve tried to do a bit of digging on it and spoke to a few people in Sweden, and they didn’t even seem quite sure on what it is.

Who is a better striker?

“It sounded like he’s not going to be around for this weekend and maybe a little while afterwards on the Newcastle front – but that isn’t official information yet, but obviously that is a blow of its own accord, that Newcastle’s record signing is probably going to be a miss this weekend.”

TIF Thoughts on Isak’s injury…

It is a huge blow for Eddie Howe and one he could have done without given that he also has the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Allan Saint-Maximin and Jonjo Shelvey as potential doubts for this weekend’s clash against Fulham.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Meanwhile, Howe and Newcastle fans may have been able to see both Isak and Callum Wilson feature together had the former been fit, but now the Magpies will have to perhaps risk rushing Wilson back into the starting lineup to fill the void left by Isak.

Reports have suggested that Isak is set to miss several weeks due to his injury, but fans will be hoping to get more clarity from Howe when he speaks to the media on Friday morning, when he will hopefully offer some positive news on the injury front.
