Callum Wilson has teased a potential return to the Newcastle United first team while speaking on The Footballer’s Football podcast.

Wilson has now missed four games across all competitions this season after starting the campaign on fire with two goals in three league games scoring against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City respectively.

Even if he was to return back from injury in the near future, it wouldn’t be a case of him simply walking back into the starting lineup given the club splashed out a record transfer fee on a new striker in the form of Alexander Isak.

Wilson was in discussion with Michail Antonio about the weekend’s game between Newcastle and West Ham and the Toon striker drop a little tease about a potential return from injury, he said:

“It’s difficult because I don’t want to say I am playing and I don’t want to say I’m not playing.”

Will Wilson play on Sunday?

TIF Thoughts on Wilson’s potential return from injury…

There’s no debating that when Wilson is fit and firing for Newcastle, they are a better team as he’s finished as the clubs’ top scorer every season he’s been with the Magpies and is currently leading the way this term.

However, given how often he picks up injuries, especially with his hamstrings, it may be a huge risk from Eddie Howe to thrust Wilson straight back into the starting lineup against a top team such as West Ham.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Especially when there isn’t as much need now at Newcastle to rush Wilson back given they have both Isak and Chris Wood who can play through the middle, therefore, Howe may well be able to ease Wilson back into training and then get minutes into his legs gradually.
