According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United’s summer target, Marco Asensio, could be gotten on a free deal in January as his contract runs out at the end of the season.

The Magpies continued their rebuild under the Saudi Public Investment Fund this summer after spending £122.4m with star players like Nick Pope, Sven Botman, and Alexander Isak coming through the door.

They were also linked to the likes of James Maddison, Jack Harrison and Asensio, but they failed to get deals for any of these three over the line before the deadline passed despite their vast financial resources.

However, much to the delight of the club and fans, Romano recently revealed Asensio is one to watch in the January window as he has not signed a new deal with Real Madrid yet and therefore could be signed on a pre-contract agreement for a free transfer that will go through in the summer.

Romano said, “But remember, Marco Asensio will be available on a free next summer because at the moment there is no agreement to extend his contract with Real Madrid. And it could be a factor this free agent story for Marco Asensio because some clubs are already exploring this possibility for next summer to sign Asensio on a free.

“So the January market depends on how these clubs will move on a potential free transfer for next summer or for another it will try to extend this contract but at the moment, still no agreement with Asensio and he wants to feel important. So, one to watch in January or on June as a free agent”. (2:43)

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on Asensio to Newcastle…

The 26-year-old Spaniard, who has been described as a ‘top’ player, would be a huge signing for Newcastle if they can get that done, even more so if they can do it on a free deal. Asensio would transform their attack in the wide area with Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak up top.

While Asensio has not been an important part of Los Blancos’ side so far this season, with just one goal in three appearances for a total of 43 minutes across all competitions, he has proven himself to be a star right-winger with 50 goals and 24 assists for the club in total.

He also currently ranks in the 96th percentile for non-penalty goals and the 95th for total shots per game while also showing he is an elite-level passer, ranking in the 86th percentile for pass completion. (Fbref)

Asensio would be a great signing even if they had to spend over £30m, but if Newcastle can get him for free, it would be an egregious mistake from their brass to pass up that opportunity. They need to make this their priority this season.
