Newcastle United are monitoring Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos ahead of the January transfer window.

This is according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who has been discussing the 18-year-old’s future on the latest episode of his Here We Go podcast.

Eddie Howe’s side failed to add a midfielder to their options over the summer window, with just four new arrivals coming through the doors at St James’ Park.

However, there were strong links to the likes of James Maddison, Youri Tielemans and Conor Gallagher, which would suggest they were in the market to strengthen their midfield.

And now just a few months out from the January window, Romano believes Dan Ashworth and Newcastle are keeping an eye on the young prospect from Vasco da Gama:

He said: “Andrey Santos is a top talent. Born in 2004, playing for Vasco da Gama, and Newcastle are monitoring him. Not just Newcastle, because he has very good agents and so his agents are exploring the market in England – and not just in England. Because this guy he’s a very talented midfielder, could be the next one to come from Vasco da Gama – they always develop top talents.

“He could be the next one to arrive [in] Europe and with a really big price tag, because we’re speaking around €30-35m price tag for this boy.”

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

It does seem as if Newcastle are planning for the long term judging by some of the targets they are being linked to in recent weeks, with a deal believed to be in place for 18-year-old Garang Kuol.

Should midfield be the focus in the January window?

And these links to Santos would only add to the notion of planning for future success. The midfielder is currently playing in the second tier of Brazilian football, which would suggest he would not be bought for immediate use.

However, he is already a prominent feature in the Vasco da Gama side having racked up 30 appearances and six goals for the Brazilian outfit at age of just 18.

Given his experience in men’s football is fairly limited, it would be interesting to see if Newcastle were to loan him straight back out if they were to acquire his services.
