Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin is not guaranteed to return from his injury issue for the weekend’s game in London.

This has been suggested by journalist Aaron Stokes when speaking on the latest episode of the Everything is Black & White podcast to discuss the Toon’s injury issues.

The Frenchman has now missed a number of Newcastle games this season as a result of a hamstring injury which he has since sustained a setback extending his time on the sidelines.

And Saint-Maximin has been keen to tease a potential return on his Instagram account with a number of posts showing his recovery journey over the last few weeks.

However, although the winger is believed to feel ready to play on the weekend, there is still no certainty that Howe will be able to select the 25-year-old against Fulham:

“For Saint-Maximin, he did suffer a setback with the physios earlier that week, which has sort of delayed his return.

“We know from what we understand, as of this morning [Monday], it looks like there’s no guarantees that he’ll be starting on Saturday or that he’ll be back.

“But if you go off his social media and if you go on what he certainly thinks, he seems to think that he’s going to be back, we know that.”

TIF Thoughts on Stokes’ comments…

It is interesting that Stokes still holds hope of Saint-Maximin turning out at Craven Cottage on Saturday, as journalist Dean Jones seemed adamant that the Frenchman would not play any part this weekend.

Newcastle’s injury crisis will certainly have fans hoping Saint-Maximin is fit enough to return on the weekend, with Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes now set for a period on the sidelines.

But as a result of this injury crisis, it is essential Newcastle don’t rush him back before he is fully ready to return in order to avoid any further setbacks.

Saint-Maximin has made a bright start to the campaign with a goal and two assists in just four Premier League appearances (via Transfermarkt).

However, Howe has shown with Wilson before the international break, he will not be rushed into returning players to action if they aren’t ready and we think that is the best option for their long-term success.
