Journalist Lee Sobot has been left impressed by the recent cameo from new Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto while playing for his country.

During the current international break, Italy hosted England at the San Siro in the UEFA Nations League and managed to claim a tight 1-0 win over the Three Lions.

Giacomo Raspadori’s superb second-half strike was enough to settle the match and relegate Gareth Southgate’s men from Group A3. Gnonto came on shortly before the goal, and it seems as though he caught the eye with his substitute appearance.

Indeed, according to Sobot, the Leeds United teenager was ‘lively’ and ‘quick’ throughout as he helped cause plenty of trouble amid an ‘awful’ England performance.

On Twitter, the journalist wrote: “Twenty-seven minutes for Leeds United new boy Willy Gnonto upon his fifth cap for Italy v England in a 1-0 victory for Azzurri. Sent on up front. Lively, quick, good movement. Looks a good one. Awful England display. Seriously lacking in creativity under this system.

TIF Thoughts on Wilfried Gnonto and Leeds…

With the likes of Brenden Aaronson, Jack Harrison, Crysencio Summerville and Luis Sinisterra all to compete against for minutes in the Leeds United side, Gnonto may not find it easy to break into the first team for his senior debut – but moments like this won’t hurt his cause.

Indeed, in the BBC’s player rater, fans even named Gnonto as Player of the Match with the highest rating of 6.95 despite only coming on off the bench during the win.

Still only 18 years old, that was the Italian’s fifth cap for his country, in which time he has one goal and one assist – so he is already proving to be a good player at international level.

With that in mind, it really does seem as though Leeds have landed themselves a fine prospect in the recent transfer market.
