Phil Hay has admitted that people behind the scenes and ones who’ve worked with Sonny Perkins are excited for the future of the Leeds United star.

Perkins was a summer signing for Leeds and one that caused quite a bit of controversy with his former club West Ham United hinting at the Whites potentially tapping up the player before he decided to make the move to Elland Road.

While Perkins may well have left for footballing reasons and opportunities to break into the Leeds first team, that hasn’t been the case with the winger not even being afforded a spot on the bench by Jesse Marsch yet.

However, after his performance for the Under 21s last week, Hay believes there is excitement around Perkins’ Leeds future as he spoke about on The Phil Hay Show.

“He’s had a really good start at Leeds. A lot of goals, a lot of people who’ve watched him train and watched him work under Marsch and with the [Under] 21s so far have been really impressed with what they’ve seen so he may prove to be a pretty shrewd signing.”

TIF Thoughts on Perkins…

It’s quite bizarre in hindsight looking at Perkins’ move from West Ham to Leeds considering that last season he was handed three first-team appearances despite still being a teenager and now after joining the Whites, he’s straight back playing reserve football.

However, if he continues to impress the Under-21s coaches and also Marsch, it may not be long until he’s knocking on the door of the first team, especially if they continue to struggle to pick up wins, they haven’t done so since Marsch.

This was a low point in Leeds United's history, but how many points did they get in the 2003/04 campaign?

While Perkins is still only 18 so has bundles of years ahead of him, he will be hoping to make an impact sooner rather than later otherwise it may well start to seem and feel like a sideways move in his career.
