Leeds United: Smyth claims club could go for Adams in January

According to journalist Graham Smyth, Leeds United could look to bolster their striking options in January with Che Adams, who was also a summer target. 

The White’s recruited a lot of good players this summer, with the likes of Marc Roca, Tyler Adams, Brenden Aaronson, Luis Sinisterra, and Rasmus Kristensen to name a few. However, one key area they failed to address what their striking options.

They did manage to sign youngster Wilfried Gnonto on deadline day, but they failed to sign the likes of Eddie Nketiah, Hwang Hee-chan, and Ben Brereton Diaz who they were linked to throughout the summer.

While they have the likes of Rodrigo, Patrick Bamford, and Joe Gelhardt on the books, Smyth believes they could use the January market to address their problem and tipped Southampton’s star, Adams, are a possible target. Despite that Rodrigo has started the season in impeccable form.

Smyth told the Inside Elland Road podcast: “And I would hope that he’s [Rodrigo] going to come back and continue to play like that, because that that would be huge for Leeds, it really would calm a lot of nerves. But the what if, is going to hang over them this season, until at least January, because you don’t know if they’ll get one in. Maybe there’ll be a Che Adams or something like that to be done in January.”

TIF Thoughts on Adams to Leeds…

While Rodrigo has carried the Leeds attack so far this season, with four goals in his first five Premier League games, he has now picked up an injury with October identified as a possible return date.

They cannot rely on Bamford now as well as he has picked up knock after knock as has struggled to get a run of games under his belt for the past season. For these reasons, it makes sense that Jesse Marsch would look to bring another option in as soon as possible.

Adams, while not prolific, could be a great option for Leeds as he has plenty of Premier League experience and currently has two goals in five games, more than Bamford and Gelhardt. He is also out of contract in the summer of 2024, so Southampton could be tempted to sell if they believe he is unlikely to resign.

The only problem is the Saints are thin in the striker area as well, and seeing as it is the January window, Leeds may have to pay over the odds to get him. But they need another option and they need it fast, injuries could get on top of them and then face another relegation battle, this time without a goalscorer to bail them out.
