According to David Ornstein, Fulham were looking at the sort after deadline day star, Bamba Dieng, in an effort to bolster their attacking options ahead of the deadline.
The Cottagers were busy on deadline day as they bought in three forwards, Willian, Carlos Vinicius, and Daniel James to reinforce their attacking depth to capitalise on their impressive start to the Premier League season.
While their business was impressive, it nearly could have become undone as it has been revealed they were looking at bringing in Dieng, who was also being courted by Leeds United and OGC Nice.
Ornstein revealed this during an appearance on the FIVE Insider show, stating, “Well, so Bamba Dieng was always going to be one that was in the mix on deadline day because a number of clubs had been looking at him including and I say Fulham because they were trying to reinforce their attack.”
TIF Thoughts on Ornstein’s comments…
Where Dieng would sign was one of the biggest sagas during deadline day, but not for the right reasons as he was supposed to fly to England to sign for Leeds, but ultimately chose to sign for Nice after they attempt a hijack of the deal. Only for him to then fail his medical, which meant the deal could not be done before the deadline.
It is not surprising Fulham were interested in Dieng who has been likened to Didier Drogba, however, as he has shown himself to be very talented at just 22 years of age. Last season he picked up eight goals and three assists while playing all across the front line.
However, considering the drama that unfolded with his transfer, the club made the smart decision not to enter that race and instead bring in James, Willian, and Vinicius who all have Premier League experience and can help them survive the season.
