TalkSport’s Alex Crook recently claimed that new Everton signing Neal Maupay is not going to be prolific and provide the goals the team needs this season.

The Toffees have struggled to find consistent form in front of goal so far this term, as they have only managed to score four times – with just one side scoring fewer through the first six games of the Premier League season.

A big reason for this has been the injury to star man Dominic Calvert-Lewin and the sale of Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur, which has left 21-year-old Anthony Gordon as their main outlet for goals.

They did manage to pick up Maupay before the end of the window to help out in the striking department, but Crook recently aired his doubts over his ability to bring the goals they need and insists that merely hitting double digits would be a good season for him.

Crook told the GameDay podcast: “I still worry about them in terms of where the goals are coming from. Obviously, they’ve brought in Neal Maupay and I think it was a good occasion to give him his debut, because he’s that type of feisty character that relishes in a Merseyside derby, but he’s not going to be prolific, let’s be honest. If he gets into double figures this season, he will have done well.”

TIF Thoughts on Maupay…

It is no secret the Toffees are in desperate need of help in the striker position and specifically need more goals in the side, and with this in mind, it is hard to see how acquiring Maupay is going to help Frank Lampard’s side in this area.

The Frenchman has not been a prolific goalscorer since he joined the Premier League back in the 2019/20 season. In fact, Maupay has only managed to hit double digits in terms of goals once in the top flight when he scored 10 in that debut season.

Since then, he has failed to do so, despite playing 33 and 32 games in the 20/21 and 21/22 campaigns respectively. What Everton need right now is guaranteed goals and we feel Maupay doesn’t bring this at all. This feels like another case of poor recruitment from the Toffees brass.
