Journalist Greg O’Keeffe has been speaking on the All Together Now podcast about how Amadou Onana’s international form may be a worry for Everton.

Onana was handed a start for Belgium over the international break, and although that will be a good thing for Onana to see his club performances rewarded by his national team manager, Evertonians may not be too happy.

This is because while he’s away performing well for his country, not only is he more likely to get injured by playing more games, but he will also only attract more interest from other top clubs despite only joining a few weeks ago.

O’Keeffe has bemoaned the fact that Onana could well perform well at the World Cup and get a move away from Goodison Park as early as next summer.

He said: “Obviously, he’s not going to leave in January – it would be unprecedented even for us. But probably speaking from we’ve been here before – not that quickly, obviously – but we’ve lost players who’ve gone away to World Cups, haven’t we?

“Obviously, Rooney you mentioned, or players going away on international duty in general with Nick Barmby and we’ve been burned by this before, so let’s be a bit more positive and say we hope he goes and, first and foremost, doesn’t get injured, has a great World Cup and comes back even better, flying, more experienced at the highest level and it benefits Everton.

Will Everton finish in the top 10?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“Unfortunately, he’s going to be on big clubs’ radars before long if he’s not already, anyway.”

TIF Thoughts on Onana’s performances…

It is a tough situation for Evertonians to be in as they will want to see as many of their players being rewarded and allowed to represent the Toffees and their respective countries, although it does always come about with a risk of injury and being poached away.

When Onana joined Everton, it wasn’t as if he was a player they plucked out of obscurity, as Premier League rivals West Ham United lodged a bid for the Belgian before he decided to join the Toffees.

Which of these Serie A stars did the Toffees miss out on?

Ideally, for Everton fans, they may be wanting Belgium to get knocked out rather quickly and Onana escapes injury while performing at a good level so that he can come back and can hit the ground running back in England and hopefully receive more glowing praise from Frank Lampard – with the manager labelling him ‘impressive‘ after his display against Brentford recently.
