Arsenal: James McNicholas claims midfielder may still arrive before deadline day

Journalist James McNicholas has claimed that Arsenal will make a signing before the end of the transfer window, but only if a quality player is available.

With just hours remaining in the summer market, it remains unclear as to who exactly the Gunners may be targeting.

However, following recent injuries to midfielders Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny, Mikel Arteta’s men may want some more numbers in the middle of the park and have been linked with Douglas Luiz in the closing stages of the window.

While speaking about the situation on his YouTube channel, McNicholas explained that while it is ‘getting late’ for Arsenal to make a move for anyone, Edu could be working on something unknown and that a midfielder could possible still arrive.

He explained: “Will Arsenal do something? I mean, it’s getting late. It’s getting very, very late. If they look to strengthen an area, it might be central midfield.

“Sambi Lokonga, I thought did well tonight, he didn’t hurt his chances of securing that No 6 position while Elneny and Partey recover.

“I think if Arsenal can get a quality player in, they will still do it – but it’s just time. Time is of the essence at this point.

“Arsenal did Tomiyasu on deadline day last season, but those wheels were in motion overnight.

“Maybe Edu’s working on something right now, we might find out.”

Will Arsenal sign another midfielder?

TIF Thoughts on Arsenal and their possible transfers…

Aside from Luiz, Youri Tielemans has long been linked with a move to Arsenal, and with Football Insider recently reporting he prefers a move to the Gunners over Manchester United, he could well be a man Edu aims for – especially as he has just 12 months left on his Leicester City contract.

Another name that has popped up in recent times is Palmeiras midfielder Danilo, who has supposedly been subject to a £20m bid that was initially rejected (via Goal).

With the Gunners evidently in the market for at least one new signing, it certainly will be interesting to see who, if anyone, they will try and land over the coming hours with plenty still unclear.
