Phil Smith has been speaking on The Roar podcast about how Sunderland won’t change their transfer strategy for Tony Mowbray.
Sunderland were very active over the summer bringing in 10 new players while also seeing seven old faces leave the club as part of an overhaul ahead of their first season back in the Championship for several years.
The Black Cats spent a total of £5.45 million on transfer fees under both Alex Neil and current manager Mowbray and that has seemingly returned massively already with Sunderland sitting fifth.
Despite the good work Mowbray has done thus far at Sunderland, Smith doesn’t see the club changing their transfer approach for the 58-year-old.
“I don’t think they would move away from well, they 100% wouldn’t move away from the model, so they wouldn’t go and suddenly spend £6 million on a 31-year-old proven striker, not a chance.
“Would it maybe slightly change what they were targeting in terms of a loan deal maybe? Possibly.”

TIF Thoughts on Sunderland transfer business…
Thus far, there is no room or reason for Mowbray to be saying to the Sunderland board they need to change their transfer approach as it’s clearly highly effective in the Championship with the Black Cats newly promoted but sitting pretty inside the play-offs.
Also, the fact that in their last match against Watford, their young stars Amad Diallo and Jewison Bennette played huge roles in the Black cats coming from behind to steal a well-deserved point away from home.
Therefore, if Sunderland find themselves in a similar position as to where they are right now, then there will be no desire or need for the board to start splashing money on veteran players who’ve got ample amount of experience under their belt as youth products are doing just fine right now.
