Rangers fell to a disappointing defeat in their Champions League qualifier on Tuesday night as Glen Kamara came in for some staunch criticism.
It was a ‘terrible performance’ from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, in the words of Rangers Review writer Joshua Barrie, as they succumbed to a 2-0 loss in Belgium in the first leg of their Champions League tie against Union Saint-Gilloise.
Teddy Teuma put the home side in front with a strike from inside the area in the first half before the Bears’ night went from bad to worse when a controversial penalty was awarded to the home side for a Connor Goldson handball and Dante Vanzeir doubled the advantage.
But for a James Tavernier clearance off the line in closing stages, the tie could well be over, although after their first-leg horror-showing, it does seem bleak for the Gers.
Kamara was called out for his display in the Daily Record, as Andrew Newport awarded the Finland international a 5/10 match rating and made the following comment:
“Gio van Bronckhorst must be wondering what has happened to the flashy Finn this past year. Slack from start to finish as he allowed Union’s midfield to dominate the big moments.”

Kamara was an established figure in Steven Gerrard’s title-winning side and has kept his place under Van Bronckhorst, but perhaps the ongoing speculation surrounding his future is taking its toll.
However, despite Newport’s claims, the 26-year-old actually enjoyed the most productive campaign of his career, scoring three goals and assisting three in 31 Scottish Premiership games.
That said, he was below par in the season opener against Livingston, putting up a 6.6 match rating, making zero clearances, blocks and tackles while managing just 44 touches before coming off on 67 minutes (as per SofaScore), and supporters will surely be hoping this isn’t a sign of things to come.
