Journalist Jonny McFarlane believes Antonio Colak could finish as Rangers’ top goalscorer this season.

The 28-year-old was signed for an initial £1.8m this summer from Greek side PAOK, but was a familiar face before he signed on the dotted line at Ibrox.

While on loan at Malmo last term, he scored twice against the Gers to knock them out of the Champions League qualifiers.

However, in a twist of fate, the Croatian striker levelled the tie as the Light Blues managed to stage a dramatic comeback against Union Saint-Gilloise on Tuesday to book their place in the play-off round of this year’s qualifiers against PSV Eindhoven.

The striker has started all four games so far this season for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, netting in each of the previous two, and McFarlane has now tipped him to go on and lead the scoring charts at the club this season.

Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel, he said: “Colak, for me, has always been a Rangers success waiting to happen. I’ve been pretty clear about that on this pod, even when he was getting seriously criticised.

“His goal record since he arrived at Rangers is now looking really, really, really good, to be honest.

“The guy is mobile for a big man, he’s got a decent touch. But here’s the thing – he’s a penalty box striker, and if you feed him, he’ll score.

“I think he can go on and be the top scorer this year, I really do.

“He will thrive in the type of games and against the type of teams where in the past, sometimes Rangers have struggled.

“I’m really happy with him. I think he’s looking like a bargain at the price that was paid, and I’ve no concerns whatsoever about Colak.”

Will Colak finish as Rangers' top scorer this year?

McFarlane’s predictions when Colak first arrived are well-founded considering the centre-forward has scored goals no matter where he has been – with the exception perhaps being PAOK.

Before making the move to Greece in 2020, he scored 51 times in 90 appearances and produced 15 assists for HNK Rijeka in his home country.

He also managed to net five goals in eight Champions League qualifiers at Malmo before arriving this summer and it is no surprise to see the three-cap Croatia ace firing both domestically and in Europe for the Gers.

With Alfredo Morelos only just returning to fitness, it appears that the position at the top end of the pitch is Colak’s to lose, and it will be interesting to see if he can permanently dislodge the Colombian hotshot, who has incidentally finished as the club’s top scorer in the Scottish Premiership in four of his five seasons at Ibrox.
