Rangers Review writer Jonny McFarlane feels that Leon King should be sent out on loan if he isn’t going to get ‘20-25 games this season’.

The 18-year-old has quickly risen through the ranks at Ibrox and during the second half of the last campaign, he began to see some minutes at senior level.

It was Steven Gerrard who handed him his debut and Giovanni van Bronckhorst saw fit to throw the youngster in when Filip Helander went down with an injury in April instead of turning to Leon Balogun and cited his level of training as his reasoning for doing so.

Back in January the Glasgow-born wonderkid signed a contract extension with the Gers until 2024 with reported interest from Manchester United and Newcastle but in order to further his development, McFarlane believes a loan move could be needed.

Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel he said:

(13:32)”My worry with Leon King I’ve got to be honest, even if he’s part of a four, how much game time is he going to get.

“He needs 20-25 games this season. If Rangers can’t give him that then he should go out on loan but I’d like to think that Rangers will give him that given the amount of games that are coming up.”

Should Leon King be sent out on loan?

With the arrivals of John Souttar and Ben Davies at the Light Blues this summer it has left GVB with quite an overstocked department at centre-back.

Connor Goldson has remained at the club, while Filip Helander and Nikola Katic are also in the squad.

John Lundstram and James Sands are also versatile options at the heart of the defence for the Bears meaning King’s path to the first team at presence could be blocked.

He has at least been included on the bench in front of Helander and Katic with the former in particular struggling with injury , however unless the Dutch manager is convinced enough by King to play him every other game then it would perhaps be best he got minutes elsewhere to prevent his progress from stagnating.
