During his time in Glasgow, Aaron Mooy will be an influential figure at Celtic, according to the midfielder’s compatriot Craig Moore.

After two years in China with Shanghai Port, Celtic fended off interest from several other clubs and secured the 31-year-old on a free transfer.

Mooy, once of St Mirren, played for three consecutive seasons in the English Premier League before his move to Asia, with spells at Huddersfield Town and Brighton & Hove Albion.

He saw eight minutes of action during the Hoops’ season opener, having 19 touches, completing 14 of his 16 passes, making two tackles and winning two out of two ground duels (SofaScore) in an encouraging cameo.

Speaking on the Record Celtic Podcast last week (3:23), Chris Sutton touted Mooy as a potential replacement for Callum McGregor should the captain get injured, and now Moore has given a glowing endorsement of the 52-cap Aussie ace.

Moore told the Go Radio Football Show: “Aaron Mooy’s a top player. He is a top player.

“The only thing that’s held Aaron Mooy back, in my opinion, from going to a top six Premiership club in his career has been his speed.

“He’s got one pace. But he can run all day, he can repeat efforts, he’s durable, his delivery, his crosses, his execution of passing, his goals… He will be a big, big player for Celtic.

“This is a player that had no fitness going into a World Cup qualifier for Australia that went 90 minutes against Peru, and by the way, he was one of the stronger players.

In Shanghai, the midfield maestro was directly involved in nine goals throughout 31 appearances.

He left England having scored 11 goals and creating a further 15 during his time at the Terriers before spending the 2019/20 campaign with Brighton.

Time will tell whether the Australian will be able to deliver in the centre of midfield following Tom Rogic’s departure this summer, but Mooy could be an astute signing at Lennoxtown this season if he can back up Moore’s assessment of him through his performances.
