Wolves are hoping that Rúben Neves will sign a new contract at the club and will still be playing for Bruno Lage’s side following September’s transfer window deadline.

That is according to journalist Dean Jones, who was speaking to GiveMeSport about the latest transfer news regarding Wolves as we head into the final weeks of the transfer window.

It had been thought in May that Neves’ five-year stint at Molineux was about to come to an end, with the midfielder hinting at a potential exit to chase his footballing “dreams”.

However, no formal offer has materialised for the 25-year-old, with the 30-time Portugal international captaining the West Midlands side in the club’s opening three Premier League fixtures of the season following Conor Coady’s loan move to Everton.

Lage has stated that the club are also working on tying Neves down to a new deal at the club this summer, with the midfielder having just two years remaining on his current contract.

And Jones believes that Lage and Wolves “would love” Neves, who has been described as “sensational” by The Athletic’s Tim Spiers, to stay at Molineux this season.

He said: “Wolves would love him to stay, and they will make him an offer, but Neves, to this point anyway, hasn’t shown much willingness to actually extend his stay.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Though Wolves fans will be disappointed to hear that Neves hasn’t explicitly expressed a desire to stay, we believe that the midfielder will be more than happy to sign a new deal at the club once the transfer window is out so he can focus on his football.

The former Porto man has been a superb buy for the club, scoring 24 goals and providing 12 assists for the club from midfield according to Transfermarkt, since his £15.8m signing in the summer of 2017, during which time Wolves have been promoted and reached a Europa League quarter-final.

The midfielder also ranked as Wolves’ highest-rated Premier League performer last term according to SofaScore, achieving a rating of 7.11 for the season.

Therefore, we think that it would be in Wolves’ best interests to get Neves to sign a new deal as quickly as possible, to at least back up his value in the transfer market if they are to sell him in the next 12 months.
