Football Daily’s Michael McCubbin believes Wolves head coach Bruno Lage could be in danger of becoming the Premier League’s first managerial casualty of the new season following the club’s bad finish to the previous campaign and lack of transfer activity so far this summer.

The Midlands club looked to be challenging for a European spot last season but due to a bad run of form at the end of the 2021/22 Premier League season, they only managed to finish 10th, just two points ahead of Newcastle United in 11th.

As a result of this and their poor form in the transfer window – which has only seen Nathan Collins come in so far – McCubbin believes manager Lage could be in danger of winning the dreaded sack race this season.

Speaking on Football Daily’s Sunday Vibes show, he said: “I actually think someone like Bruno Lage is maybe in a bit more trouble [than Frank Lampard]. Wolves were very uninspiring towards the end of last season, weren’t they, and when they’re not getting results, that style of football doesn’t get many fans, does it?

“Business has been pretty limited, hasn’t it – Nathan Collins, making Hwang permanent, which I think was actually confirmed in January. So, they haven’t made huge strides to improve the squad.

“Obviously, we’re filming this with a month left of the transfer window to go, aren’t we, so a lot of these predictions are influenced by what has been only two-thirds of the window so far. But having said that, I think they ranked second-bottom for xG last season.”

TIF Thoughts on McCubbin’s comments…

Wolves failed to win a single game in their last seven fixtures, which included a 5-1 thumping by Manchester City, a 3-1 loss to Liverpool and a deflating 3-0 loss at home to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Despite this, they boasted one of the best defences in the entire league, ranking fifth for goals conceded but they struggled to score all season, ranking 17th for goals scored with just 38 across the season.

So far this summer they have not managed to address their goals coring problem and in a recent game against Besiktas, their star striker Raul Jimenez picked up an injury that could keep him out of the side for the first few games of the season.

With under a week left until the start of the season and no new forward coming in at the time of writing, it is going to be hard for Wolves to come out of the blocks firing, and if they do struggle, it could see an unprecedented end for Lage already.
