BBC Sport contributor and Wolves presenter Dave Azzopardi has voiced his concern that Bruno Lage’s side don’t have enough quality in the backup positions for midfielder and attack.

The Old Gold continued their preparations for the new Premier League season with a recent friendly match against SC Farense that ended 1-1.

To start the match, Wolves named a pretty inexperienced team, with a number of unproven youngsters given the chance to impress in midfield and attack.

However, after watching the game, Azzopardi expressed his fear that the squad doesn’t have enough quality in depth and stated the the club ‘desperately need reinforcements’ before the transfer window shuts.

While speaking on the Talking Wolves podcast following Sunday’s match, he explained: “So today we saw predominantly the younger lads, the second-string team.

“We also saw a back four of Toti Gomes, Boly, Coady and Mosquera. But other than that, it was pretty much U23 players, fringe players.

“Big concern for me, though, if that’s the strength of our second XI, it is worrying. No disrespect to the guys that played out there today, but from the midfield forwards, Wolves desperately need reinforcements.”

TIF Thoughts on Wolves…

Connor Ronan is one of those players who started in that most recently friendly for Wolves, and considering he has been at the club since 2014 and has just 13 senior appearances despite now being 24 years old, it’s easy to see why Azzopardi feels as though more proven quality might be needed.

Interestingly, the club have recently been said to have watched exciting young Red Bull Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko, so it certainly seems as if they are considering options to bring in to the team.

However, with Manchester United among those also keeping tabs on the forward, that transfer doesn’t seem realistic as this stage. And so, with the transfer market set to slam shut at the start of September, Wolves may need to act fast if they want to bolster their squad and ease Azzopardi’s concerns.
