Wolves are set to ‘escalate’ their pursuit of Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos as the club have already been in contact with the player – but they face competition from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain for his signature.
So far this window, the Midlands club have failed to bring in many players, with only Goncalo Guedes and Nathan Collins arriving prior to the recent signing of Sporting’s Matheus Nunes, and it seems they could look at Ramos as well.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Wolves have already been in touch with the player, and as owners Fosun are looking to back the squad in the final weeks of the transfer window, a deal for the 21-year-old is still on the cards.
Speaking on Newcastle United-focused podcast NUFC Matters prior to Nunes’ arrival, Jacobs said: “There’s a lot of speculation over Goncalo Ramos.
“PSG are interested as well. Wolves are the club that Newcastle in the Premier League would have to be the most wary of, and the reason for that is because they’ve been tracking him for quite some time.
“Bruno Lage has called Ramos personally to find out whether this deal is possible – and Fosun, by the way, are suddenly backing Wolves, Nunes is another really good signing that’s just come off. So, they’re going to escalate that and see whether anything’s possible. PSG are tracking the player as well, but there’s certainly some substance to the Newcastle interest.”
TIF Thoughts on Ramos to Wolves…
Wolves are in desperate need of a forward after losing star man Raul Jimenez to injury prior to the season starting and sending young starlet Fabio Silva out on loan. Ramos could be the perfect addition to the side for a couple of key reasons.
Firstly, he is just 21 years old and therefore, while they will be hoping for an immediate impact amid Jimenez’s injury, once their star returns, he can fit straight back into the lineup and help develop Ramos alongside manager Bruno Lage.
Secondly, Ramos has shown his class in the Portuguese top flight – which has seen numerous new signings start well on these shores including Luis Diaz and Bruno Fernandes – with eight goals and four assists to his name in all competitions last season, while so far during his 2022/23 campaign, he has already managed four goals and three assists in just four games.
However, one sticking point that could affect this transfer is that Benfica are reportedly looking for around £30m to sell Ramos, and considering Wolves have just agreed a club-record deal for Nunes, they may be reluctant to complete another big deal this summer.
