Wolves’ interest in Sporting’s Matheus Nunes will not directly impact the future of Belgian midfielder Leander Dendoncker.

That is according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who was speaking to This is Futbol about Wolves’ transfer plans ahead of the final few weeks of the window.

According to Fabrizio Romano in July, Everton and Frank Lampard were interested in the prospect of bringing Dendoncker to Goodison Park this summer, with the 27-year-old’s contract at Molineux expiring next year.

The same insider had earlier reported that Bruno Lage’s side were showing an interest in Sporting midfielder Nunes, but personal terms on the player’s side were ‘more than difficult’.

Asked whether interest in the Portuguese midfielder would have a direct impact on the future of Dendoncker, O’Rourke replied:

“Not necessarily. I think the squad does need strengthening at Wolves.

“They haven’t made many signings this window with just Nathan Collins coming in at centre-back, so I think Bruno Lage will be hoping to strengthen his squad and keep hold of his best players.

“Dendoncker, although he has been in and out of the team in the last season or so, he does offer a lot to that Wolves team, he can play in several positions, he can play at the back or in midfield or as a wing-back.

“So I’m sure Bruno Lage would ideally like to keep hold of Dendoncker and add to the squad with the pursuit of Nunes as well.

“Two different players as well position-wise, so I think any move for Nunes shouldn’t directly affect Dendoncker.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

We believe that Wolves fans will be satisfied to hear that the club could potentially be keeping the services of Dendoncker, even if the unlikely signing of Nunes goes ahead.

The 29-cap Belgium international, who has been described as a “big character” in the team by Lage, has scored 12 goals and provided four assists in 154 appearances since signing for the club on an initial loan deal in August 2018, suggesting that he is a useful body to have in the squad.

Therefore, we believe that fans of the Molineux club would be delighted to see Nunes and Dendoncker potentially in the same squad this season.

It won’t impact on any player, we need squad depth, why is it that everytime we look like signing a player these tin pot hacks think it will have an impact on a player or we will be selling one
