Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that he would be surprised if Wolves were to tie Ruben Neves down to a new deal.

Neves has entered the final two years of his current contract with Wolves, but Bruno Lage has reportedly opened talks with the Portuguese midfielder over a new deal that would hopefully see him commit his long-term future to the club.

However, Neves has been linked with a move away from Molineux this summer, with Barcelona and Premier League rivals Manchester United showing interest in him.

However, despite reports stating that talks have opened between Lage and Neves over a new deal, Jones spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that he would be very surprised if the 25-year-old puts pen to paper on a new contract.

He said: “I think Jorge Mendes has other plans for him, to be honest. I’d be very surprised if they tied him down to a longer deal.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Wolves have spent just over £106m this summer, and after missing out on qualification for any European football last season, the level of spending could persuade Neves to stay at the club as it shows the ambition and direction they intend to go in.

However, it might look like Neves will stay at Molineux for this season, but if they do not qualify for Europe this time around, he might opt for a move away from the club, as he will just have one year remaining on his deal with the club, at which point they might look to cash in on him.

It will be interesting to see how the Neves saga pans out, as the signing of international teammate Matheus Nunes might also help keep him at the club, especially if they can form a partnership similar to his one with Joao Moutinho.

Meanwhile, with Morgan Gibbs-White now set to head out, perhaps this is a sign they intend to keep Neves on board for the season ahead.
