According to TalkSport’s Alex Crook, Wolves are now in a battle to sign Benfica star man Goncalo Ramos before the end of the window.
The Midlands club started slowly in the transfer window, but have now brought in Goncalo Guedes and recently announced the signing of Sporting star Matheus Nunes in a club-record £42.2m deal.
However, one area they are still trying to address is the striker position, where they are incredibly thin, with key man Raul Jimenez picking up an injury and Fabio Silva being sent on loan to Anderlecht.
But it looks like they could have found their man, as Crook states they are in for Ramos, who has impressed at Benfica – though they face competition from Southampton, who are also looking to bolster their attacking options.
Discussing the Old Gold’s transfer business, Crook told TalkSport: “They’re also keeping tabs on another Portuguese-based player, the Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos – looks like a straight shootout between them and Southampton for him. And I think in some ways, Ramos would be a more important addition [than Nunes], because they do look lightweight up front.
“And we don’t know what sort of Jimenez we’re going to see when he comes back, because I think we can all acknowledge that he wasn’t the same Jimenez last season as he was before that horrible head injury.”
TIF Thoughts on Ramos to Wolves…
Wolves desperately need to add goals to their team after they ranked 17th in the Premier League for goals scored last season with just 38 – only bettering relegated sides Burnley, Watford, and Norwich City.
While Ramos is just 21 and still has a lot of improvements to make, he would have finished top of the Wolves goalscoring table if he was to replicate his tally of eight goals and four assists in English football. He looks set to improve on that number already this season, as he has five goals and three assists in just five games for Benfica in all competitions.
Benfica are reportedly looking for around £30m to sell Ramos, which could be seen as a lot for a 21-year-old, but Wolves are desperate and have under two weeks to get the rest of their business done, which is a recipe for an overpay.
