TalkSport’s Alex Crook has revealed that Ruben Neves has given Wolves ‘a bit of a problem’ by staying put so far this summer.
The Portugal midfielder has previously been linked with both Barcelona and Manchester United, with neither move coming into fruition in the end. Crooks has claimed, however, that Neves’ failed move away has actually had a slight affect on Wolves’ summer business.
Crook told GiveMeSport: “That’s a bit of a problem for Wolves because at the start of the summer, when there had also been interest in January from Manchester United and Barcelona, they almost built their business plan around selling Neves for decent money.”
As things stand, Lage has welcomed just three arrivals this summer, with one of those being Hwang Hee chan, and the other two being Nathan Collins, and, most recently, Gonçalo Guedes. And, with a matter of weeks remaining in the summer transfer window, it remains to be seen whether we see more signings through the door.
TIF Thoughts on Crooks comments…
It’s quite the conundrum for Wolves, who will be pleased to see a player of Neves’ calibre stay put at the club for now. Yet, at the same time, having already planned for life without the midfielder, according to Crook, they’ve been left in a difficult situation without many reinforcements.
With Neves’ contract expiring in the summer of 2024, we may only see the midfielder in a Wolves shirt for one more season. The last thing that the Midlands club will want is to wave goodbye to their star for free once his contract ends, therefore perhaps forcing a sale next summer.
Without a significant number of reinforcements, Wolves have had a fairly difficult start to the season, losing to Leeds United on the opening day, before drawing 0-0 against Fulham.
