Insider ExWHUemployee has said West Ham United could have a chance of signing Lucas Paqueta if his transfer fee is lowered.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Hammers could be set to try and land the Brazilian midfielder this summer, with a fee in the region of £67m being touted.

In response to this news, Ex has stated that West Ham would have no chance of being able to afford such a high transfer for the Lyon star.

However, in a post on The West Ham Way Patreon page, he said that if reports of a lowered fee are true, the Irons could well still be in with a shot at landing their man.

Indeed, 90min has reported that Lyon are now ready to do business for their player at around £33m with add-ons, which could potentially open the door for West Ham to swoop in.

Ex wrote: “There was talk in the press yesterday of a £67m offer being prepared by West Ham for Lyon midfielder and Brazilian international Lucas Paqueta.

“We will not be able to pay that much for the creative midfielder, however, it has been reported that Lyon have dropped their asking price to between £30-40m, which could give us a chance, although once more competition is rife for the player.

“We broke the interest in Paqueta a number of weeks ago and it makes sense for the club to follow up on. There are a couple of other attacking midfielders that are at the initial target stage as the club contemplates enquiring about them.”

TIF Thoughts on Lucas Paqueta and West Ham…

As Ex mentions, there is indeed plenty of competition for the player, so a deal may be hard to pull off, especially as Lyon may not have to lower their asking price too much if clubs like Arsenal – who have been linked throughout the summer – also have a genuine interest.

And with nine league goals and six assists while playing for Lyon last season, it’s easy to see why the ‘world star’ may well have plenty of Premier League sides chasing his signature.

So this doesn’t seem like one to get too excited about just yet as far as West Ham are concerned, but it is certainly one to keep an eye on as we near the transfer deadline.
