Insider ExWHUemployee has claimed that West Ham United have been offered the chance to sign defender Jason Denayer on a free transfer.

As things stand, the Hammers seem to be in the market for a new centre-back before the transfer window slams shut due to their current lack of options there following some key issues in the backline regarding the likes of Craig Dawson, Nayef Aguerd, Angelo Ogbonna and Issa Diop.

Indeed, a number of possible names have popped up as transfer targets in recent times – such as Paris Saint-Germain’s Thilo Kehrer – but now Denayer, who used to play for Lyon, seems to be an option that has landed in the lap of West Ham and their recruitment team.

Indeed, while providing updates on The West Ham Way Patreon page, Ex revealed that the Belgium international is available on a free transfer should the Hammers want him.

He wrote: “It is believed that Jason Denayer, who played against us for Lyon this year, has been offered to the club. The Belgium international is on a free transfer following his release from Lyon and David Moyes worked with him at Sunderland when the player was on loan.

“Whilst he doesn’t fit David Moyes’ usual height requirements for a centre-back, he is versatile and can play in defensive midfield and at full-back. He would also constitute as homegrown having started his career at Manchester City. Moyes saw potential in him whilst at Sunderland but is said to be after other targets at the moment.

“Denayer has a number of offers in from English clubs and it is thought that these include Leicester City and Fulham as well as some Spanish teams. It is thought, however, that Moyes and Newman want to work on other options first and that Denayer is not of immediate interest for now.”

TIF Thoughts on Jason Denayer and West Ham…

As Ex mentions, Denayer did play under Moyes and actually made 27 appearances for the West Ham boss – so they should have a decent understanding of one another.

Last season, however, the Belgian struggled for fitness and game time as he made just 12 starts for Lyon in Ligue 1 before his contract expired in the summer.

With that in mind, Denayer certainly isn’t the most glamorous option available to the Hammers, but his established relationship with Moyes could make him a good alternative option should other transfer aims fail.
