ExWHUemployee has claimed that West Ham will now ‘speed up’ Angelo Ogbonna’s recovery plan.

David Moyes has been left short-handed at centre-back at the start of the new campaign.

With an injury to summer signing Nayef Aguerd and Craig Dawson the manager was forced to select Ben Johnson at the heart of the Hammers defence in last week’s season opener with Manchester City.

Now it appears that the club are hoping Ogbonna can make a premature return to action after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in November of last year.

At 34, the condition he may return in remains to be seen but it does seem as if Moyes is keen for the Italian rock to recover with Ex’s update.

Writing on The West Ham Way Patreon account he said:

‘The club are also putting Ogbonna on a speed-up fitness plan to try and get him all ready for first-team action as soon as possible.’

TIF Thoughts on Ex’s update…

Do you think West Ham should sign another defender?

Considering the lack of options at centre-back it is no surprise to see the club urgently trying to bring the 13-cap Italy international back to full health.

Moyes has admitted that the defender isn’t yet fit to be ‘considered’ for the matchday squad but is ‘coming along nicely’.

Ogbonna started the first 11 league games last season before going down against Liverpool having been a key figure in the Irons side who finished sixth in 2020/21.

Darren Gough called the left-footed centre-half ‘outstanding’ (talkSPORT via West Ham Zone) for the form he showed prior to being ruled out and it will be interesting to see if he can match that level upon his return.
