TalkSport pundit and former footballer Tony Cascarino has delivered his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur wing-back Ryan Sessegnon, who he believes has an ‘opportunity to shine’ this season.

The 22-year-old played an important role as Spurs came from behind to get off to a winning start in the Premier League this weekend.

Following James Ward-Prowse’s opener for Southampton, Sessegnon played the unlikely role of goalscorer to equalise with 21 minutes on the clock.

Goals from Eric Dier, an own goal by Mohammed Salisu and Dejan Kulusevski’s strike made it a comfortable afternoon for the hosts. Following the victory, Cascarino had his say on Sessegnon, saying on TalkSport: “Ryan Sessegnon, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with him this year, because he’s not played enough.

“I know that he might not make the team every week in matches to come, but there is a big difference in him as a player and the way their style suits him.

“Their wing-backs are really important to Spurs, so he’s got an opportunity to shine now.”

TIF Thoughts on Sessegnon…

We’d have to agree with Cascarino when he says that Sessegnon hasn’t played enough. In fact, last season, he made just 13 Premier League starts in another frustrating campaign. But it should be pointed out how much difference a few months can make, with Conte seemingly favouring the young wing-back this season after handing the defender a consistent run in the side towards the end of last term.

It must be said, though, that Sessegnon will have competition for his place in the current campaign following the arrival of Ivan Perisic. The former Inter ace, who has previously played under Conte, arrives with plenty of experience and know-how, and will be vying for a starting place.

Conte will surely be pleased to have such depth in what is a packed season of fixtures. With Premier League games often coming thick and fast, the trick to finishing inside the top four and potentially beyond may well be having a squad full of players who have every right to be claiming a starting place, so it will certainly be fascinating to see whether Sessegnon grabs this chance.
